本剧跨越四十年，探索了北爱尔兰被称为“动乱”的动荡时期。以吉恩·麦康维尔的惊人失踪事件开场，吉恩·麦康维尔是一位十个孩子的单身母亲，1972 年在家中被绑架，从此再也没有人见过她活着。但麦康维尔只是众多被称为“失踪者”的人之一。
